About Prestige Farms
Our roots in the production and distribution of fresh poultry dates back over 70 years when George “Pop” Murphy started Queen City Poultry in Charlotte, NC. Several of Pop’s sons–in–law – Tommy Thompson, Sloan Pettus, and Preston Burris joined the business and then branched off to form Thompson Poultry in the 1950s. Thompson Poultry continued to serve the growing Charlotte community until Tommy’s death in 1969.
Two of Tommy’s sons followed in his footsteps and started Piedmont Poultry Products in the early 1960s. Opening their processing plant on Lambeth Dr. in Charlotte, Eddie Thompson and Jimmy Thompson processed and sold their high quality poultry products to restaurants and supermarkets in Charlotte and the surrounding communities. Piedmont Poultry’s growing customer base allowed the company to purchase a new, larger facility on Orr Rd. in Charlotte in 1984. At that time Piedmont Poultry was renamed Prestige Farms and the corporate offices and processing plant still occupy that space.
Prestige Farms continued to grow throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s by offering superior service and products, especially in the growing market for boneless breast. Realizing early on that this market was destined for explosive growth, the company began acquiring smaller poultry processors throughout the southeast, including Wagon Wheel Poultry in Myrtle Beach, SC (1981), Jones Poultry in Durham, NC (1988), and Filet-of-Chick in Atlanta, GA (1998). In part, this strategy helped Prestige Farms to grow from 25 to over 200 employees and increase annual sales 900%.
Like many successful companies, Prestige Farms has grown by dedicating itself to providing superior products and service and offering competitive prices. With 5 distribution centers, we now provide fresh poultry products to over 2000 food service customers in 7 states. We also distribute frozen products such as MSC, trim meat, leg quarters, and wing tips all over the world through our Exports division. As boneless chicken breast specialists, our products are used at many major events in the southeast, including most recently at the Kentucky Derby!
We look forward to serving your poultry needs. Give us a call today and let's see how we can grow together.
